A nonapeptide with a real clinical record
Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. It has been used clinically for a long time in obstetric contexts, which puts it in a small group here: compounds with a decades-long record of supervised human use.
It is also structurally close to vasopressin, differing at two positions. Two residues separate a hormone associated with uterine contraction and milk ejection from one that regulates water balance, which is a good reminder of how little it takes.
Structurally it is a closed molecule rather than a straight chain. A disulfide bridge joins two cysteine residues and folds most of the sequence into a ring, leaving a short tail beyond it. That ring is part of why the peptide holds up comparatively well, and it is also the feature that has to survive intact for a batch to be what its label claims.
Mechanism
The social hormone question
Research into oxytocin and social behaviour, trust and bonding produced a wave of striking early findings, particularly from intranasal administration studies. It is where the popular name comes from.
That literature has since had a difficult decade. Several headline effects failed to replicate at scale, and whether intranasally administered oxytocin reaches the brain in meaningful quantity is itself contested. The clinical record is solid; the social-behaviour claims are not settled.
A good deal of the trouble is measurement. Assays for the hormone have historically disagreed with one another, findings reported in small samples have not always held up in larger ones, and the delivery question sits underneath both problems. A field carrying all three at once tends to produce confident headlines and unstable results.

Someone typing what is oxytocin into a search engine meets the nickname long before the pharmacology, which is the wrong way round for anyone planning work on it. Reading the two literatures side by side
The two bodies of work attached to this molecule separate easily once you look at them directly instead of through a summary. The registry entries on ClinicalTrials.gov show where it has been formally studied and against which endpoints, and the obstetric and behavioural arms of that list read very differently from one another.
On the published side the indexed work on PubMed is enormous, and the useful filter is study design rather than subject. Replication reports and pooled analyses will tell you more about the state of the field than any individual striking finding, however widely it was repeated afterwards.
